Emp Living Situation

Allen is currently squatting on the outskirts of Verens in a dusty old cottage lying close to the ground. It has a lonely, forgotten atmosphere. It seems to have lain dormant for a long time, but it still smells faintly of old lady and potpourri. Probably someone's grandmother passed away in this cottage a long time ago and her family has left it to rot. When he found it, there were still white cloths draped over the furniture like stagnant ghosts. It's like a cottage in the country for those who miss the country but may have not seen it for a long time, and so its likeness is that of a memory. Since Lavi has moved in, however, he's breathed some life into the cottage: the white sheets are gone, and the rooms actually looked lived in. The air is a little more welcoming with the dust cleared away.

Sitting on the eastern windowsill is a glass jar full of ashes. It has been reverently placed there, the dust swept away to make space for it. On either side of the jar sits two candles from Selenium, both lit once before. Unlit Selenium candles sit in all the other windowsills, pillars to memories of the lost and forgotten like statues in a graveyard, patiently waiting for someone to light them and remember.

A leather suitcase holding all of Allen's worldly possessions is placed neatly next to the couch, likely the only orderly thing in the cottage (other than, perhaps, Lavi's collection of books.) There are pink petals sprinkled here and there from the Flower Festival that Allen and Lavi brought home. Strewn all around the couch are food wrappers from Allen's sad food binges and general bad habits. He doesn't spend much time in the cottage, but his roommate, Lavi, just might.

Tucked between Allen's mattress and the box spring is his stash of savings--everything he's saved up since arriving in Verens. He counts it every morning.

Allen's belongings upon arrival:

★ two Selenium candles previously lit obtained here, placed on the windowsill (one for Mana and one for Tim)
★ fifteen Selenium candles for a rainy day bought through grief and greed, all placed in the windows, unlit
★ a memory journal that records memories as they are remembered, obtained from Selenium
